Students will review the memoir writing genre and the centrality of descriptive elements to it. |
2. Jumping into the Memoir Genre
Feb 12, In-class
The class will consider the structure of the memoir essay and optimal strategies for building this type of text. |
3. Polishing the Memoir
Feb 19, In-class
Students will review common grammatical errors in college writing, conduct a systemic review of their fellow classmates’ drafts, and make final edits and revisions to their essay drafts. |
4. Analysis and Argumentation

The class will familiarize themselves with the argumentative style of writing. |
5. Evaluating Data and Drafting your Argument

Students will review structural and content-related issues concerning the argumentative essay. |
6. Tidying Up the Argumentative Essay
Mar 11
The class will conduct thorough reviews of their argumentative essay drafts and provide feedback about their colleagues' progress. |
7. Strategies for Analyzing Film
Mar 18, In-class
The class will consider rhetorical appeals and the efficacy of their use in films. Students will conduct research and locate ideal secondary sources. |
8. Optimally Organizing Film Analyses

The class will review an exemplary film analysis and its structural logic. Students will consider the organizational logic of their own rough drafts. |
9. Closing Credits

Students will focus upon the organization and content of film analysis body paragraphs, conduct careful analyses of their colleagues’ current drafts, and make final revisions and edits to their own texts prior to submission. |
10. Introduction to the College Research Essay

Course members will review the college research essay writing genre and consider how they may best go about composing an analysis of a selected text or topic. |
11. Structuring a Coherent Research Essay

The class will organize their research findings, make important connections between their sources, and develop a clear plan for their research essay. |
12. Anticipating your Critics

The class meeting will focus upon possible rebuttal research and the synthesis of contradictory viewpoints. |
13. Closing Curtains on the College Research Essay
May 13, In-class
Students will consider models of college research essay writing before moving on to complete final revisions of their essays. |
14. Looking Back at Our Progress
May 20, In-class
The class will review each of our major assignments. Students will then revise the lowest scoring of their first three essays (the memoir, film analysis, or profile). |
