This course gives students an insightful orientation into the history of western art from the Middle Ages to the contemporary period through the architecture and art of Prague. The city is seen as a virtual openair museum and a life-size 3-D reading book; therefore the classroom lectures are combined with regular excursions throughout the city.

Here is the course outline:

Class 1 - Course syllabus, Lecture 1 + a short field trip

Feb 6 11:30am .. 2:15pm

Topic: Lecture 1 – Overview of the history and architectural styles – in class Field trip after the lecture: Walk and talk about the history of the AAU location: Thurn-Taxis palace, Vojan gardens + The neighborhood. Description: See your closest surroundings and their historical importance. Review questions will be asked at the end of each walk – Activity points awarded. Reading: Review the pdf Lecture 1 in NEO. Assignments/deadlines: Discussion 1 in NEO from the practical field trips + a discussion to submit and participate in NEO – 40% (in total at the end of the whole course)

Class 2 - Field trip: Meeting in the AAU courtyard at 11:25 am SHARP!

Feb 13 11:30am .. 2:15pm

Topic: Romanesque and Gothic architecture Field trip, AAU courtyard at 11:25 pm SHARP Romanesque rotunda of Holy Cross + The Old Town: Bethlehem chapel, Old Town square, Astronomical clock tower, Tyn church, House at the minute (Kafka), Charles University, Ungelt. Review questions after the walk – activity points awarded. Description: The Rotunda is among the oldest preserved monuments in Prague. The walk will continue to the Old own of Prague. Class 3 - Field trip: St. Agnes Monastery - Meeting in the AAU courtyard at 11:25 am SHARP!

Feb 20 11:30am .. 2:15pm

Topic: Early Gothic Architecture + Medieval Art Field trip: St. Agnes monastery, Gothic monument + Gothic art collection Description: The earliest Gothic monastery in Bohemia + Gothic paintings / sculptures. Class 4 - Field trip - Former Jewish town

Feb 27 11:30am .. 2:15pm

Topic: Gothic, AAU courtyard at 11:25 pm SHARP Field trip: The Jewish town Description: Field trip to visit the area of the former Jewish ghetto / town – prepare for walking during the entire class / wear comfortable and warm shoes. Be on time. Reading: Review the pdf field trip summary in NEO. ! Watch a video on Gothic cathedrals, link in NEO – questions will be asked during the field trip of class 5 (Activity points awarded). Class 5 - Prague Castle

Mar 5 11:30am .. 2:15pm

Topic: AAU courtyard at 11:25 pm SHARP! Field trip: The Prague Castle - Description: The architectural exterior + interior walk (The architectural styles of gothic, baroque, and classical styles) + Nerudova street (House signs) – prepare for walking during most of the class / wear comfortable and warm shoes. ● Review questions after the walk + the Video on the Gothic cathedrals from class 1 homework will be discussed – activity points awarded. Reading: Review the pdf field trip summary in NEO. Read the information about Prague Ghetto in NEO Resources before week 3! Assignments/deadlines: Homework written assignment DUE week 6 – Graded 10%: Get familiar with the house signs in Nerudova street + other parts of Prague’s Old Town. Make research + Place a short-written assignment to NEO dropbox. Assignment description will be provided during the field trip, and also to NEO, week 5. Class 6 - Lecture + a Field trip to the Charles Bridge

Mar 12 11:30am .. 2:15pm

The lecture starts in class – Introduction of the Midterm student guided walk topics, explanation of the task. Topic: Gothic, Field trip AFTER, meeting at the AAU courtyard: The Charles Bridge + The Charles bridge museum Description: Square of the Knights of the Cross with a Red Star, Museum of the Charles bridge + walk over the Charles bridge. Discussion 6 – see the assignment dropbox in NEO. ● Prepare for the Midterm graded walk in week 7 (20%), study from the AAU Library + online sources about the topic which you will prepare: ● See the books in the syllabus Find relevant monuments related to the sites which will be visited and prepare for the oral presentation.

Class 7 – Midterm Student guided tour - 20%

Topic: Midterm, 20%: AAU courtyard at 11:25 pm SHARP Description: Field trip: Guided Tour of selected locations guided by the students – 20% of the final grade The Hradcany + Lesser Town area walk. Students will present their topics individually in an oral presentation to the class.

Class 8 - Field trip - Renaissance art and architecture

Apr 2 11:30am .. 2:15pm

First a lecture in class: Renaissance art and architecture After a field trip to the Summer palace of Queen Anne + the Royal gardens. Description: Students will be able to see the renaissance style and which elements make the style recognizable. Review questions after the walk – activity points awarded. Class 9 - Mannerism

Apr 9 11:30am .. 2:15pm

Mannerism - Meeting in the courtyard at 11:30 am A field trip to the Manneristic Wallenstein Garden & Architecture, + St. Thomas church and abbey Description: Students will be able to see the manneristic style and which elements make the style recognizable. Class 10 - Baroque + The Vrtba garden

Apr 16 11:30am .. 2:15pm

First lecture in class - Baroque art.: The style of Baroque + an introduction of the Final essay (20%) with a description of the task. After that a field trip to the baroque gem, the Vrtba garden. Description: The walk will take us to a hidden gem among the Prague gardens, Lesser Town. The hidden Baroque treasure will show a great example of the genius of a local builder Kanka for Count Vrtba in the 17th century Prague. Do not miss this trip! Class 11 Field trip: The Old Masters – National Gallery, Schwarzenberg Palace

Topic: The art of painting and sculpture in renaissance and baroque times - AAU courtyard at 11:25 pm SHARP Field trip: The Old Masters – National Gallery, Schwarzenberg Palace Description: Visit of an important collection of art from the Renaissance and Baroque European Masters. ● Video on Baroque homework will be discussed again for the typical features of the style – activity points awarded. Class 12 - Field trip – Trip to the Lesser Town, Kampa

Apr 30 11:30am .. 2:15pm

Topic: Renaissance and baroque architecture, Lesser Town - AAU courtyard at 11:30 am SHARP Field trip to walk in the neighborhood from AAU – Lesser Town square, St. Nicolas church + the Kampa area. Description: The field trip: Church of Our Lady Victorious, Monument against communism, Kampa Island + visit of the Museum Kampa (Modern art). Description: The walk will introduce the history and monuments in the Prague quarters Lesser Town and Kampa, close to AAU. Reading: Review the pdf field trip summary in NEO for the next discussion. Class 13 Field trip - The Industrial architecture

May 7 11:30am .. 2:15pm

Topic: Short lecture in class: 19th + 20th century art and architecture After a field trip: The Industrial style Description: Main train station, (Secession/Art Nouveau), Jerusalem synagogue, The Municipal house, Cubism – Czech version in architecture – Josef Gočár (House by the Black Madonna) Review questions after the walk – activity points awarded. Class 14 - Field trip – Development of a functional architecture

May 15 2:45pm .. 5:30pm

Topic: Field trip: 20th + 21st century art and architecture - We will meet in the classroom first for completing the course evaluations. Course wrap-up Description: Development of a functional architecture independent from the decorative historical styles - visit of the National gallery – The Exhibition palace / course wrap up get together. Assignments/deadlines: Final essay, 20% - due Place to NEO dropbox on time – do not print it out!

Class 14 - Contemporary art and architecture

May 16 11:30am .. 2:15pm

AAU courtyard - Field trip: Contemporary art and architecture - DOX, Centre for contemporary art Assignments/deadlines: Final essay, 20% - due Place to NEO drop box + in a printed form to hand to teacher at the beginning of the last class!
