1. Introduction to Research

Feb 8 11:30am .. 1:15pm

A discussion of the essential aspects of the course content and procedures. What are traits of good research? Where to look for research and how to orient oneself in scientific discussion?

2. The Research Question

What makes a good research question? What consequences does a research question have regarding the manner of its answering?

3. Quantitative Research

The epistemological and ontological background. The major features and applications of the quantitative approach. Mixed Methods research.

4. Qualitative Research

The epistemological and ontological background. The major features and applications of the qualitative approach.

5. The Role of Theory

Why is theory important to successful research? Disentangling assumptions, concepts and theories. The linkages between theory and the literature review.

6. Research Design

Progressing from interest in your topic to a strategy for project completion. Conceptualization and operationalization.

7. Getting the data

Mar 21

Different kinds of data. Good practice for data collection.

8. Historical Analysis

Why is history an atypical branch of the social sciences? Historical principles and methodology explored?

9. The Case Study

What makes a good case study? Coding.

10. Writing the Research Proposal

The criteria of a solid research proposal. Suggestions for structuring the proposal.

11. History + Research: into the Kitchen of Real Life (+comparative research)

History + experience. +When should we consider comparative research?

12. Research Proposal Workshop I

Each student will offer a five to seven minute oral research proposal. The research proposal will briefly introduce the research area, define the research question, present the theoretical framework/literature, describe the methods to be employed and summarize the contribution the proposed research will make. PowerPoint is advised, though not so many slides as to make the presentation too long or complex. Online students will present as well. Each presentation will be followed by questions and feedback

13. Research Proposal Workshop II

14. Final Course Project

Students will submit their final course project, the research proposal (see below for basic guide to contents and format).
