1. Course Description

The Art Advanced Studio course is a continuation of the Art Studio Research Project ART 388 with a focus on the realization process of the Final Art Project. Students follow the planned steps in their proposals. In addition to creating an art piece students communicate with the advisor on a regular basis in order to learn and include all the important principles of the academic approach to the creative process. The outcome of this course is the Final Exhibition.


2. Student Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this course, the students will be able to:

▪ gain knowledge about the production and organization of an art piece and exhibition
▪ develop skills in critical thinking, and writing. Work with a review format
▪ understand better what is the role of an artist in relation to the institution, the public, and historical context
▪ confidently communicate with the critics and the public
▪ design and execute their own extensive art project

4. Teaching methodology

The course will take the form of collective and individual meetings where students will be presenting the progress of the work on their final project. The meetings will be designed accordingly to the themes explored by the students in their final proposals and based on individual approaches.

Here is the course outline:

1. : Where to start + General requirements for the art project

Students get all the information about the studio program – assignments, deadlines, principles of communication. Discussion about different forms of exhibitions and approaches in art presentation. Budget.

2. Individual Approach + Project form

: Defining the topic of the final project and developing a schedule for the work process. Seminar dedicated to the construction of the most original and authentic art piece. Students discuss with the advisor their research and intentions in the art piece creating and exhibiting.

3. Studio Visit + Proposal

What the process of artists’ selection should be all about? How to imagine a ready exhibition before we even start working on it? How to sketch art visions. What materials are convenient for my art piece? Site-specific principles. Assignment: Students write the final proposal.

4. Be Creative + Material selection

Description: A visit to Art Re Use Center, the library of materials and other art supplies shops in terms to research the material possibilities, discussing the needs of certain techniques. Sharing experience with different materials.

5. Work in progress + Architecture of an exhibition

Students present their inspirations from the last session and space sketches of their works. Different architectonical styles of exhibitions. Developing the project ideas in connection with the chosen form and materials.

6. Art process

Realization and presentation of the art work, focus on the experiment and gained skills. Discussing and proposing next steps.

7. Artistic Statement

Session dedicated to the composition of art describing text and own critical reflection. Sharing examples of artistic statements and principles of this text format.

8. Gallery is my partner

Visit of the gallery, principles of communication with the gallery, gallery structure and the responsibilities, conditions of exhibiting. Making an exhibition plan and schedule – who will arrange what and when. Budget.

9. PR strategies

What must be done to let audience know about an exhibition. Poster and its forms, social media promotion principles, emailing, formats of the pictures, fonts, useful tools and apps.

10. Postproduction of an exhibition

The pop-up exhibition is not as important as its post-presentation. Especially today the social media and art blogs do the most important work for artists. They let the world know about their existence and quality. Students learn how to arrange good photos, how to post them, send to media. Portfolio and web presentation. Time schedule is essential.

11. Art process

Realization and presentation of the art work, focus on the experiment and gained skills. Discussing and proposing next steps.

12. My work in the art history context

Students must be aware of artists working with the same topics and forms as well as of the contemporary art movements and tendencies. Discussion about the inspiration sources, collaborations, individuality and originality.

13. Don’t Panic!

The last meeting before the project launch. Organizational briefing, final touches, transportation. Artistic statement is ready.

14. Project Launch

May 23, AAU STUDIOS

The finalization, execution, and celebration of the final project. Installation, refreshment, presenting the art piece to a jury and public.
