Course
1. Course Description
The Art Advanced Studio course is a continuation of the Art Studio Research Project ART 388 with a focus on the realization process of the Final Art Project. Students follow the planned steps in their proposals. In addition to creating an art piece students communicate with the advisor on a regular basis in order to learn and include all the important principles of the academic approach to the creative process. The outcome of this course is the Final Exhibition. The course will take the form of collective and individual meetings where students will be presenting the progress of the work on their final project. The meetings will be designed accordingly to the themes explored by the students in their final proposals and based on individual approaches.
2. Student Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of this course, the students will be able to:
▪ gain knowledge about the production and organization of an art piece and exhibition
▪ develop skills in critical thinking, and writing. Work with a review format
▪ understand better what is the role of an artist in relation to the institution, the public, and historical context
▪ confidently communicate with the critics and the public
▪ design and execute their own extensive art project
Here is the course outline:
1. History of abstract artIntroduction of the course and the lecturer, introducing the practice of Jana Babincová. Presentation of the history of abstract art - important artists and movements. |
2. Beyond the VisibleContemporary abstract art presentation. Creating sketch books. Projection of the movie Hilma af Klint – Beyond the Visible, discussion, notes. |
3. Spin the Wheel of ColorsIntroductory color theory, creating own color palettes. Visit of the teachers´ art studio in Pragovka Art District. |
4. See it from inside outIntroduction to abstract and conceptual painting, introduction to contemporary painting, the new forms of painting, experiments, digital and post-digital, painting crossing the media. After the presentation students draw the same content in 10 different ways. They choose one of the composition and bring it on a canvas. They choose or create the initial color palette. |
5. Studio Work I - First visionsIntroduction to work with acrylic colors and canvas. Composition principles, orthogonal lines, color palettes, rhythms of composition, different painting techniques in practice. Students present their first painting on canvas in progress. Share experience, thoughts, feelings. |
6. Studio Work II - SynesthesiaStudents continue with the painting process. Synesthesia experience. Visualisation of different sences based on physical experience from given tasks in the art studio. Transforming students visions into shapes and colours. |
7. Studio Work III - ExperimentVisual Experiments based on non-aesthetic principles. Presentation, discussion. Students draw the visions they have based on instructions and practical experiments. |
8. Studio Work IV - Micro and macroStudents develop their painting technique on the next canvas while involving the abstract art principles of micro and macro cosmos. Zooming in the nature and own experience and soul. |
9. Studio V - Presentation and description of an art workStudents finish their second canvas and write descriptions of their works. Assignments/deadlines: Students present their painting works with the descriptions. They discuss and share experiences. |
10. Final Project Art Work IFinal project preparation, theme, content of the artwork and task, sketches. Material selection. Students focus on their own interests and involve the gained experience from the studio work. |
11. Final Project Art Work IIArt practice, developing students' own art pieces. Discussion about extending media that could be used in their final projects. Involving the five main creative principles - imagination, curiosity, cooperation, endurance and discipline. Intuition and fantasy can´t be missed. |
12. Final Project Art Work IIIWork on the final project. PR and post-productin principles. Poster assignment. Introduction in graphic design in art world. Information and organization of the exhibition. |
13. Preparation of the exhibitionStudents finish their works and collaborate in the planning of the final exhibition. They draw the installation ideas and discuss the production. |
14. The Final ExhibitionFinal project installation, exhibition, post-production and online presentation. Presentation of own works to the audience. Students present a written defense of the presented art work. Students have a party. |
