2. Session 2 - Film Form & Style

Sep 30

Form as overall patterning in a film; Style as film's use of cinematic techniques.

3. Session 3 - Film narrative

Oct 7

Discussion of (classic Hollywood) narrative, narration, narrator, story, plot and diegesis; Narrative of Casablanca discussed.

4. Session 4 - Mise en scène - Setting

Oct 14

Components of mise en scène are examined; Setting, props as narrative and expressive tools. Costume and Make-up, Production design.

5. Session #5 - cinematic objects

Description: analysis of the function of cinematic objects; basic semiotics used to analyze visual rhetoric. Shots from film We Need to Talk about Kevin (and others)

6. Session 6 - Cinematography

Components of mise en scène are further examined to include cinematography - camera angles, frame, composition, basics of lighting. Clips from tutorials and films are used for elaboration. clip from Night of the Hunter

7. Session 7 - Sound and Editing

Nov 4

Discussion of functions and techniques of sound and editing in film art. Discussion of alternatives to classical Hollywood Narration. Screening: Rashomon. Midterm Exam opened after class.

8. Session 8 - Film Acting

Acting and the Star system, Film style, Introduction to genre; Types of actors, approaches to acting, Directing actors, Acting styles;

9. Session 9 - Presentation on Horror Genre

Nov 25

Student presentation on the Horror genre; conventions, context, audience expectations, major films and filmmakers working within the genre

10. Session 10 - Film Noir Genre presentation

Dec 2

Student presentation on the Film Noir genre; conventions, context, audience expectations, major films and filmmakers working within the genre) Screening: The Maltese Falcon (101 minutes) or The Third Man (93 min)

11. Session 11 - Western Genre

Dec 9

Student presentation on the Western genre; conventions, context, audience expectations, major films and filmmakers working within the genre) Screening: Scenes from westerns and High Noon (85 minutes)

12. Session 12 - Action/Thriller Genre Presentation

Dec 16

Student presentation on the Action/Thriller genre; conventions, context, audience expectations, major films and filmmakers working within the genre). Screening: scenes from action films and Taken (90 minutes)

13. Session 13 - Sports Genre

Dec 23

Student presentation on the sports film genre; conventions, context, audience expectations, major films and filmmakers working within the genre) Screening: Scenes from gangster films and The Bad News Bears (102 min. )

14. Session 14 - Final Exam

Final exam is comprehensive of all material covered in course, but primarily from readings and lectures assigned since midterm: chapters 1-6, 8-9 in Bordwell's Film Art; Barsam & Monahan, pp. 85-119 and chapter 7 in Looking at Movies, ch. 13 Pramaggiore, including student presentations on genres, readings and screenings.
